Easter inspired by mountain beauty in Bow Valley services, ski hill fun

By Pam Doyle

What could be more uplifting and inspiring than the beauty of the Canadian Rocky Mountains?

Many consider the mountain majesty to be spiritual - especially as the promise of springtime approaches. This Easter, services will be held inside, outside and on mountaintops for every denomination and for those who just want to be thankful for the panorama that surrounds us here in the Bow Valley.

The most spectacular service will be held on Easter Sunday (March 27) on a flat snow plain at the top of the Strawberry chairlift at Sunshine Village ski area. The non-denominational service will be given by Rev. Klaus Ohlhoff. Who would have thought we could go to church in our ski boots?

And for the kids, the Easter bunny will be hopping about the hill all day. At 9 a.m. til 10 a.m. the Easter bunny will greet skiers at the base area at the gondola and he might even have some treats.

Later, the bunny will do the hop outside the daycare while children six years old and under will hunt for hidden eggs. After lunch, the Easter bunny will bound up Strawberry to hold an Easter egg hunt for older kids aged 7-12. For more information, check the Sunshine website at www.skibanff.com.

The Easter bunny also plans to make an appearance at Lake Louise, where he will hand out treats and visit with children on the ski hill.

If you are not a skier and still want to stand under the giant peaks that surround us in Canmore, Ralph Connor Memorial United Church is holding a sunrise service of praise and thanksgiving at 8 a.m. at Riverside Park. The park can be seen if you look upstream from the Bow Valley bridge in downtown Canmore. Rev. Robert Stewart is also holding an Easter service at 10 a.m. at the United Church on Main Street.

St. Michael's Anglican Church is holding its Easter service at 9 a.m. in the church, also on Seventh St. and at 10:30 a.m. in the church hall. Sunday school and nursery school is held at the later service.

St. Paul's Presbyterian Church in Banff at the corner of Banff and Wolf Streets plans to hold an outdoor Easter service at 8:30 a.m. but Rev.Clay Kuhn has not yet decided on a location. There will also be an 11 a.m. regular worship in the church.

Whatever your faith, plan to look up a church in the Bow Valley or just take a walk down the peaceful river walking paths and soak up the glory of the Bow Valley on Easter Sunday.
