March begins springtime countdown in the Canadian Rockies

The Canadian Rockies, for all their incredible beauty, can be a chilly place to live in the wintertime. That doesn't mean the brilliant blue skies, relatively dry valley climate and endless outdoor recreation don't make up for a little bit of a dip in the mercury. It's rather that most people begin to long for springtime and a welcome change of season after several months of the white stuff.

A great thing about this part of the world, however, lies in the fact that excellent snow conditions for skiing and myriad other winter sports remain while the strength of the sun increases and longer, blue sky sunny days arrive. It's a clear sign of the season's welcome change ahead. It's also pretty much the perfect time to take a winter vacation, whether you live in the area and can take a few days off, or you travel from another corner of the world for a week or more.

Canmorites, as we call ourselves, can always remember the first day we feel the lovely warmth of the sun on our faces - a welcome change from the double-digit-below-Celsius weather of January. With mountains all around, we track the sun's movement above the horizon of mountain peaks, watching as it climbs into the sky to cast warm light on street side benches and garden terraces. First-time visitors might be surprised to arrive in early March to find townsfolk warming themselves outdoors, enjoying a cappuccino at a local coffeehouse, or taking a break from downhill skiing with an alfresco lunch.

In this edition of SolaraLife, we celebrate the imminent arrival of spring, but balance this with some stories that will keep you in the 'here-and-now' of wintertime enjoyment.

Join us for a tour of Canmore's favourite coffeehouses - we have an inordinate number for a town of this size; take your first trek on snowshoes to discover some forgotten corners of the Rockies' winter landscape; learn about Canmore's earliest days when First Nations people roamed the land hunting and fishing; and take a trip into nearby Calgary for the first of 10 great city escapes.

If you're soon to join us in Canmore for a wintertime holiday on the edge of spring, we welcome you and hope you find SolaraLife full of inspiring information.

In this edition, SolaraLife is pleased to introduce our Canadian Rockies: Essential Events Calendar. One look at all there is to do in any given month will prove that Canmore and Banff are the cultural and recreational hub of Canada - and prove also that you don't need to be bored unless you want to be!
