All variety of arts lovers ascend to enjoy Banff Centre offerings

There likely aren't many places in the world where you can see a bear and a ballet on the same day*. Or go fly-fishing in the morning and be listening to a string quartet recital in the afternoon. But in the Bow Valley it's not only possible, it's the way we live.

The Banff Centre has been an internationally renowned centre for the arts since 1933. Word premières of opera share the stage with international string quartet musicians, full-scale ballet and theatre productions, blues, folks and popular music concerts, North American First Nations performances, symphony concerts and modern productions that defy classification! All year 'round professional performing and visual artists are in residence at the centre and not a week goes by where there isn't something happening on a stage or in a gallery.

But in the summer, the place becomes a riot of performance and art during the Festival of the Arts. And in the winter, The Centre for Mountain Culture produces the International Mountain Book and Film Festival, where you'll find yourself rubbing shoulders in the lobby with some of the world's most daring mountaineers (along with the filmmakers who've immortalized their feats). And if that weren't enough, touring artists from around the world regularly stop in Banff and perform in the centre's Playbill series.

Participants in The Banff Centre's music residency program have the opportunity to perform for the public at small, intimate venues in both Banff and Canmore.

I suppose we mountain dwellers could take it for granted that we can hike a wildflower-studded trail during the day and then enjoy an evening of star-studded entertainment at night. But we don't. We know this is very, very special and we are delighted to share our experience with visitors from around the world. Won't you join us?

Well, in New York you could probably see a bear and a ballet on the same day, but they wouldn't be in the same neck of the woods! The bear would be in a zoo...and so would you!

Julie Kehler

The Banff Centre is located on Tunnel Mountain in the town of Banff, a 15-minute drive from Canmore. See this edition's accompanying article on The Banff Centre's Winter Concert Series.
