Explore the art, science and history of wildfires. This 30-minute guided tour takes a look at artwork created in response to the changes that fire makes to the landscape and melds elements of science and history along with art interpretation. Parks Canada’s award-winning theatrical show, Water on the Rocks, runs all summer at the Cave and Basin. Tickets are available at the Friends of Banff store in the Banff Information Centre, the Bear and Butterfly store on Banff Avenue, and at the door.

Out of the Wildfire presents work that documents and reacts to the remarkable changes that took place in our landscape through the catalyst of fire, in a prescribed burn, in the summer of 2003. These works, created by 23 artists from Cochrane to Victoria, were affected by last summer’s fires. Some are pure artistic responses, some chart the destruction, some use fire as a tool or catalyst, and some serve as the artist's catharsis. Join us in exploring Out of the Wildfire.

Elizabeth Rummel & Swiss Guides Room, The Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies The Lens of Time helps us see change in the landscape of the Canadian Rockies over the past 120 years. Generations of photographers tended to visit the same viewpoints, thereby documenting change in the mountains. Using this documentary heritage, photographers, Cliff White and the late Bruno Engler, have made great efforts to replicate their views of their earlier counterparts and allow us to see this landscape change in more contemporary views. Join us and experience the combined influence of man and nature on our great mountain landscapes through The Lens of Time.

A Fiction on the Run

A Fiction on the Run is all about the road. Curated by Catherine Bourassa-Hebert and inspired by Jack Kerouac’s 1957 novel On the Road, this exhibit reflects different views of the road, using artwork by Canadian and international artists.

Great Expectations: Banff 1979 and 2004

Great Expectations 1979 and 2004 is a photography exhibit at The Banff Centre curated by Charlene McNichol. Winnipeg-based artist David McMillan produced a series of photographs of the town of Banff in 1979 while taking part in a creative residency at The Banff Centre. The series captured small, personal views of the town at that time — back alleys, front yards and private homes. In 2004 he was invited back to revisit the original series and produce another portrait of the town 25 years later. The exhibit features work from both 1979 and 2004, offering one artist’s perspective on how Banff has changed and grown in the last 25 years.

Explore the experiences of one remarkable Philadelphia Quaker family, the Vauxes. Their adventures as tourists are a touchstone for Victorian travel in the Rockies. Their artifacts and images document the adventures of the enlightened tourist of a century ago, and will perhaps inspire you to pen your own postcard home and include the phrase "Having a wonderful time. . . wish you were here."

Visit the home of Norman and Georgina Luxton and their daughter Eleanor. This home reflects the family’s ties with the Stoney Native people, their contribution to Banff’s business and cultural activities, and their passion for collecting over a century of changing tastes.

Ongoing Events:

Art from the Heart is an ongoing exhibition of work in various media at the Canmore Hospital Gallery, 1100 Hospital Place, Canmore, with a portion of funds raised going to the hospital foundation. Artists’ work is hung and displayed in hospital corridors.:
